Panel Discussion of Utility Deployment - Next Steps

Moderator: Dr. B.J. Stanbery, Chief Strategy Officer - HelioVolt Corporation
Dr. B.J. Stanbery career spans more than 30 years in the solar industry. He is an expert in the business and science of photovoltaic materials.  His latest innovation, inkjet printing of CIGS, won a 2008 R&D 100 Award, often called the "Oscars" of technology commercialization. Dr. Stanbery won widespread recognition in 2005 for his groundbreaking theoretical model of CIGS materials science and device physics. He founded HelioVolt to develop and commercialize his revolutionary FASST® process for applying CIGS thin-film photovoltaics directly onto conventional construction materials that is now covered by
sixteen issued patents globally.

Panelists:
Kathy Weiss, Vice President Government Affairs, First Solar
“PV Industry Perspective”
Kathy is responsible for government affairs for First Solar and represents the company on various trade and business association.  First Solar manufactures solar modules with an advanced thin film semiconductor process and provides comprehensive system solutions that significantly reduce solar electricity costs.  First Solar has set the benchmark for environmentally responsible product life-cycle management by introducing the industry’s first comprehensive collection and recycling program for solar modules.  First Solar is focused on creating cost-effective renewable energy solutions that protect and enhance the environment.

John H. Baker Jr., Chief Strategy Officer for Austin Energy
“Municipal Utility Perspective”
John responsibilities include strategic planning, business intelligence, business model analysis, and emerging clean energy technology development for Austin Energy, the community-owned electric utility of the City of Austin, Texas.  Since creating Austin Energy’s strategic planning function in 2002, Mr. Baker has helped set Austin Energy’s sustainable energy direction by leading the development of Austin Energy’s 2003 Strategic Plan; implementing an agreement with the University of Texas’ Clean Energy Incubator for clean technology development; developing renewable energy options that led to a 30MW solar plant; and by serving in key leadership positions in the Pecan Street Project.

Jake Wade, Net Metering Program Manager for Puget Sound Energy.
“Investor-owned Utility Perspective”
Jake manages the interconnection process and customer experience for renewable energy customer generation under 100 kW.  He also managers PSE's involvement in Washington State's Renewable Energy Cost Recovery Program.  Jake joined PSE in 2006 as an Energy Advisor before moving to PSE's Green Power Program.  Prior to joining PSE, Jake worked in marketing in both the computer software and hardware industries.

Michael Winka, Director Office of Clean Energy, New Jersey Board of Public Utilities
“Regulatory Perspective  - Installing PV without Rebates - Long term SREC contracts”
Mike manages the New Jersey Clean Energy Program and the State Energy Plan. The Office is responsible for promoting energy efficiency, clean energy generation and renewable energy generation through the various regulatory and non-regulatory tools.   Mike is the designated State Energy Officer for Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy activities and is support staff for the NARUC Renewable Energy and Greenhouse subcommittee.

Jane Weissman, Executive Director, Interstate Renewable Energy CouncilWorkforce Perspective -  Making Sure the Green Economy Doesn’t Get a Black Eye”
IREC focuses on current and often difficult issues impacting expanded renewable energy use such as rules that deal with connecting distributed renewables to the utility grid, developing quality assurance programs for practitioners, products and services, and getting the right information to the right people (www.irecusa.org).  Ms. Weissman is Vice Chair of the North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners (NABCEP).Over the past eight years, Ms. Weissman has developed expertise in quality assessment through certification and accreditation programs.  She was one of the team members for the development, design and implementation of the NABCEP credentialing organization.
